Climate outcome ‘hangs on coal’ apparently

Tidal power stations, a viable alternative to oil and coal?

Tidal power stations, a viable alternative to oil and coal?

If growth in carbon dioxide emissions is to be constrained and even reversed then the world cannot afford a coal renaissance, scientists have said.

Some commentators have argued that falling reserves of oil and gas will automatically limit CO2’s rise.

But at an American Geophysical Union meeting, researchers said reserves of coal dwarfed those of other fuels.

It was even possible oil’s demise could trigger an acceleration in emissions through more coal use, they added.

“We can replace oil with liquid fuels derived from coal,” said Ken Caldeira from the Carnegie Institution at Stanford University in California. Read more…

Green solutions to recession

If past experience is anything to go by, recessions are not kind to green politics. I recall the buzz of campaigning for the Green party in the late 80s. We had an unprecedented explosion of environmental awareness that was rapidly followed by the virtual disappearance of the environment as a political issue when the impact of the early 90s’ recession started to bite. After securing 15% of the nationwide vote in the 1989 European elections, those of us who stood on the Green ticket in the subsequent general election three years later were struggling to get 500 votes apiece.

That mustn’t happen this time. It is vital that the environmental and the economic challenges we face are dealt with in an integrated fashion. As the Stern report made so clear the economic cost of not dealing with climate change would be devastating compared with the cost of dealing with it.  Read more…

Heathrow runway decision delayed

Transport secretary Geoff Hoon says government needs more time to consider evidence over controversial airport expansion.

The government’s decision on whether to build a third runway at Heathrow has been postponed until January 2009.

A consultation was expected to report on whether work on the runway – which would be ready by 2020 – should begin this year. The scheme would take Heathrow’s capacity from 480,000 flights a year to more than 700,000.

Today, the transport secretary, Geoff Hoon, said the decision had been delayed to allow proper consideration of the evidence. Read more…

China’s first greener jet flies – Is it really much better?

China successfully flight tested its first home-grown commercial airliner.

The ARJ-21’s maiden flight lasted one hour and the aircraft did not rise above 900 metres in altitude due to safety reasons.

The 90-seat jet flew out of a local Shanghai airport and its manufacturer expects it to fly distances up to 3,700km.

Each jet will cost $27m (£22.6m) and first deliveries are expected to take place within 18 months.

It’s general manager Jin Zhuanglong said: “With less fuel consumption and longer flight hours, the ARJ-21 will reduce air fares by 8% to 10% for Chinese airlines, most of whom currently use large aircraft above 140 seats on short and medium routes.”

But are they really more economical?? Read more…
